#ChoosePT

#ChoosePT

UNM DPT Class of 2018, along with PTA students and NMAPTA members, gathered at the Roundhouse for PT Legislative Day on February 23, 2017.

There are only two healthcare providers serving as New Mexico legislators this year, and both are PTs! Liz Thompson, pediatric PT and mother of a son with autism, sponsored a memorial for February 23rd , 2017 to be recognized as #ChoosePT Day. This aligns with APTA’s national initiative to encourage healthcare providers to prescribe PT as a first line of defense against chronic pain. Julianna Koob, our NMAPTA lobbyist, empowered our students to have conversations with representatives to advocate for our profession and our level of training. We concluded the morning by overlooking the House of Representatives as the #ChoosePT memorial was announced and passed unanimously.

CSM 2017 in San Antonio

CSM 2017

CSM 2017 was held in San Antonio, Texas. The weather, RiverWalk, San Antonio charm, and networking made this year's CSM quite enjoyable, and Marybeth so appreciated being able to attend this year. She enjoyed a preconference course on pediatric gait and strapping for proper biomechanical alignment.

In addition, educational highlights included segmental evaluation and targeted treatment for development of head control, early diagnosis of cerebral palsy for tailored neuroplastic intervention, eccentric control from breathing to walking, pediatric hip conditions, and low tech to high tech infant assessment.

Marybeth & Ron

Marybeth and Ron were pinned in the recognition ceremony for specialty certification, and Fred, Burke, and Beth gave selflessly of their time to cheer for us.

Karen Pettine, PT, DPT (class of 2016) and Marybeth presented our poster of Karen's capstone project analyzing impairment-matched interventions for toe walkers seen at ExplorAbilities Pediatric Therapy Center.
