Medical Student Outreach Program Kit

In 2009, the Perry Initiative was created to inspire women leadership in orthopaedic surgery and engineering careers. We at the UNM Department of Orthopaedics & Rehabilitation have hosted the organization's famous all-day event for high-school girls, the Perry Outreach Program, since 2013. We are excited to announce that the Perry Initiative selected our site to host a brand new program model in 2016: the half-day Medical Student Outreach Program (MSOP) Kit.

The Perry Initiative explains the goal of the MSOP Kit perfectly: “to connect students to orthopaedic surgeon-mentors and like-minded peers, as well as introduce fracture fixation techniques and power tools.” Here at UNM, we strive to provide an opportunity for our female medical students to explore surgical interests in an inspiring environment of active learning.

On September 17, 2016, we hosted our first MSOP Kit! A total of twenty-seven UNM female medical students jumped aboard hands-on workshops in intramedullary nailing and external fixation of synthetic femur bones, guided by the leadership of senior medical students and UNM Orthopaedics residents, physicians, and fellows. View the photographs below to see some active learning underway.
