Orthopaedic Physical Therapy

What we offer:

FREE physical therapy evaluations, treatment, and education. 

Patients will be evaluated by a group of 3 UNM DPT students, overseen by a licensed UNM PT faculty member. Will receive a PT evaluation with home exercise program prescription/modification and patient education. Possibility of 2-4 follow up visits, depending on the need & availability.

Our Goal: 

To provide high-quality PT services for the underserved populations of New Mexico, aimed at improving function and quality of life, and empowering patients to take charge of their health. To offer hands-on learning opportunities for DPT students.

Eligibility: Patients should have good rehab potential and a high level of compliance.

Patients with Orthopedic Conditions who would benefit from a PT evaluation (referral required).

We are accepting patients who meet one of the following criteria:

  • Uninsured
  • Have a medicaid insurance (Molina, Centennial Care, Salud)
  • UNM students
  • Have been to a PT and have reached the maximum allowed visits from insurance
  • Are currently in PT with a limited number of allowed visits from insurance

Please note that inability to afford your copays/deductibles is not one of our eligibility criteria. If you do not meet our eligibility criteria, we may be able to offer you a one-time consultation, based on our availability.

Patients with Neurological Conditions who would benefit from ongoing PT services.

We are accepting patients who meet ALL of the following criteria:

  • Have already been seen by PT for this condition at some point (not mandatory)
  • Have an official diagnosis made by a physician (no referral required)
  • Not reliant on hydraulic lift systems to walk or move onto a treatment mat

Preference will be give to patients with insurance restrictions or limitations, but this is not a requirement.

Patients with Pediatric Conditions who would benefit from PT evaluation.

We are accepting patients who meet one of the following criteria:

  • Have run out of visits and are still in need of therapy
  • Unable to access appropriate pediatric physical therapy services
  • In need of initial PT services, but are on a long wait list elsewhere

Can be seen without a referrral only if the child has an official diagnosis made by a physician.
Please know that your child's services will be intermittent, such as once every 4-6 weeks, so our focus will be teaching you how to help your child.

When: 

Appointment times are 45 minutes:

At UNM Domenicii Northwest: Ortho Appointments run from 3:30 pm - 6:30 pm, Neuro appointments run from 4:00 pm - 7:00 pm

At ExplorAbilities: Pediatric appointments run from 5:30 – 6:30 PM

Thursday evenings only.

Because we are unable to offer routine physical therapy, please understand the following policies related to our clinic:

  • We are unable to see patients who are currently involved in lawsuits related to their condition
  • We are unable to assist patients in pursuing disability benefits
  • If we feel that your condition requires routine physical therapy and you have some insurance benefits, we will recommend that you pursue routine PT at another venue
