Burke Gurney, PT, PhD

Burke Gurney graduated with a degree in Biology from Lamar University in 1979. In 1980, he began his Masters of Science in Biochemistry at Lamar with a concentration in burn research when he became interested in physical therapy. He graduated from the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston, Texas with a B.S. in PT in 1982. He relocated to Santa Fe, New Mexico where he practiced physical therapy for 10 years in a variety of settings including sports medicine, orthopedics, and geriatrics.

In 1987, Burke started his own practice with 2 other PT’s and continued that until 1992. During that time, he started working toward his Masters in Philosophy/Literature at St. Johns College in Santa Fe, graduating in 1989. He entered academia in 1992, starting the San Juan College Physical Therapist Assistant Program in Farmington, NM. He remained there until the program was accredited and the first class graduated in 1994. He then moved to Albuquerque to teach at the University of New Mexico Physical Therapy Program, and received his Doctorate in Exercise Physiology from UNM in 2000.

Burke Gurney was promoted to Associate Professor in 2006, full Professor with tenure in 2012, and was appointed as Chief of the Division of Physical Therapy in 2013. Dr. Gurney stepped down as Division Chief in August 2018 and will be staying on at 25% to concentrate on teaching and research until his full retirement in July 2019.

Burke earned his Orthopaedic Clinical Specialty Certification in 2007 and was successfully recertified in 2017. Dr. Gurney is the teacher of record in PT 505: Foundations, and is co-teaching PT 545: Differential Diagnosis I. He is involved in research both within the Division and in the Exercise Science Program. Dr. Gurney will continue his consulting practice and return to private clinical practice.
