Sunflower Chirieleison, PT

Sunny

Adjunct Faculty

Sunflower Chirieleison received a Bachelor’s of Science degree in 2000 and a Master’s of Science in Physical Therapy in 2004 from the University of New Mexico.   She has worked as a physical therapist at The University of New Mexico Hospital, a Level I Trauma Center, since 2004 and serves as a team lead/staff mentor on the Burn and Trauma Rehabilitation teams.  She worked as the primary inpatient and outpatient burn therapist at The University of New Mexico Hospital from 2005-2015. She is an active member of The American Burn Association and has played a primary role in developing and implementing a burn therapist training program for the University of New Mexico Burn Center.

Mrs. Chirieleison was instrumental in establishing an interdisciplinary Early Mobility program at The University of New Mexico Hospital in 2014. Her critical care experience combined with her integumentary expertise led her to create an evidence-based algorithm for assessing and minimizing the risk of pressure ulcer development for patients in the acute care setting, as well as appropriate progression of upright sitting for patients at risk.  She has presented the algorithm to healthcare providers locally and nationally.  She is passionate about holistic multidisciplinary acute care and frequently presents lectures to critical care nurses and providers regarding current standards of practice in burn care, early mobility and pressure ulcer prevention.

She has been a guest lecturer in The University of New Mexico Occupational Therapy Graduate Program since 2012.  She has been teaching burn care to graduate physical therapy students at The University of New Mexico Division of Physical Therapy since 2007 and is currently an adjunct faculty member.
