Dr. Black specializes in Orthopaedic Sports Medicine and treats athletes of all ages and activity levels. Her practice focuses on arthroscopic surgery of the knee, ankle, and shoulder. She also performs surgery for shoulder instability, rotator cuff tears, shoulder arthroplasty, and knee arthroplasty.
She began her medical education after working for 13 years as an Exercise Physiologist. Her work prior to becoming an Orthopaedic Surgeon focused on coaching sports-specific athletes to improve performance. She completed medical school in Michigan, where she was raised, and residency training in Missouri. She came to the University of New Mexico for fellowship training in orthopaedic sports medicine. She began practicing in the Department of Orthopaedics Sports Medicine Division at UNM Sandoval Regional Medical Center in August 2016. She serves as a Team Physician for the UNM Lobos varsity athletic teams.
Dr. Black enjoys both basic and clinical research. Her research interests include the treatment and clinical outcomes of multi-ligamentous knee injuries, cartilage preservation, adolescent and pediatric sports injury treatment, and sex and gender differences in musculoskeletal injuries. She is a candidate member of AOSSM and AAOS, and a member of the Ruth Jackson Orthopaedic Society.
