2016-17 Orthopaedic Surgery Fellowship Program Selectees Announced

A geographically diverse roster of candidates has been accepted for 2016-17 fellowship programs with The University of New Mexico (UNM) Department of Orthopaedics & Rehabilitation. Starting August 1, the following five physicians will join one of three, Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education-accredited fellowship programs with UNM Orthopaedics:

Hand & Upper Extremity Fellowship

James Rose, graduate of University of Colorado School of Medicine, Aurora, CO and Louisiana State University Residency Program, Baton Rouge, LA.
Erica Gauger, graduate of University of Minnesota Medical School and Residency Program, Minneapolis, MN.

Sports Medicine Fellowship

Matthew Lilley, graduate of University of Southern California Keck School of Medicine in Los Angeles and San Francisco Orthopaedic Residency Program at St. Mary’s Medical Center.
Blake Obrock, graduate of Midwestern University Arizona College of Osteopathic Medicine in Glendale and Good Samaritan Regional Medical Center Residency Program, Corvallis, OR.

Trauma Fellowship

Samer Kakish, graduate of Jordan University of Science and Technology and Royal College of Surgeons of Ireland in Dublin.

More than 100 applications for UNM Orthopaedic Surgery Fellowships were received during the 2014-15 submission season—double the number from last season—which resulted in 53 interviews for six 2016-17 fellowship openings: two for hand, two for sports medicine and one for trauma. “I was attracted to UNM’s Hand and Upper Extremity Fellowship because of the wide variety of pathologies seen and treated as well as exposure to training in the entire upper extremity—including shoulder,” says Gauger. “The dedicated microsurgical lab experience was unique to this program and a large draw,” she adds.

UNM Orthopaedics Hand & Upper Extremity Fellowship Program dates back to the early 1970s and has produced 84 graduates. It is the longest tenured program of its kind west of the Mississippi River. The department’s Sports and Trauma Fellowship programs, each more than a decade in existence, have collectively graduated 30 fellows.
